Youth Centre in North London relocated its mentoring services to school premises in Barnet, making use of the available facilities. This project started on 1st October 2022 and supports approximately 150 KS3–KS4 mentees from BAME and disadvantaged backgrounds, including refugees and migrants across North London.
Youth Centre is designed to make the following differences by enhancing educational outcomes, improving the efficiency of mentoring services, supporting mentees’ mental well-being, and guiding young people to become active and engaged members of their communities.
Key Details of Youth Centre:
· Educational and mentoring services: Delivered on Saturdays for 33 weeks, with sessions lasting 4–6 hours.
· Facilities available: Sports hall, canteen, and classrooms.
· Classroom structure: Each classroom will accommodate approximately 15 mentees, with one qualified teacher and mentor.
Charitable Activities Offered Weekly:
· Academic Support: Supervised homework sessions led by a teacher and mentor.
· Well-being Sessions: Covering important topics such as poverty, mental health, and social connections.
· Skill-Based Sessions: Engaging activities including basketball, football, and video editing.
· Value-Based Sessions: Lessons on British values, societal integration, cultural norms, and etiquette.
To ensure the programme meets the needs of mentees, we conducted both primary and secondary research, helping Mentor Wise tailor the curriculum to maximise its impact. This approach strengthens our mentoring programme and improves the backbone of the community.
